Your draft
Standard post · 2800 / 280
280 characters remaining

Post preview
IllustrativeYour post will appear here as you type.
Spacing and line wrapping will vary in X. This preview is for a standard post, not a Premium longer post.

Words are separated by spaces or line breaks; this is not a language-aware word count. Uses published twitter-text 3.1.0 rules. Newer emoji or domains may differ in X; check the final draft there.
How to use the Twitter character counter
Paste the complete draft
Include your links, hashtags, emoji and line breaks. The counter updates as you type; there is no submit button or signup step.
Check what fits
Watch the remaining allowance and highlighted overflow. Open the link breakdown if a short web address uses more space than expected.
Copy and review in X
Copy preserves your original text, including spacing. Paste it into X and review the final result before publishing.
Tweet character count: examples you can check
These examples use the published standard-post rules. A count of visible symbols alone would miss the differences.
| Draft text | Count | Why |
|---|---|---|
Hello world | 11 | Ten letters and one space. |
Hi 👨👩👧👦 | 5 | Two letters, a space and one recognized emoji worth two. |
東京 | 4 | Two Japanese characters, weighted at two each. |
https://example.com | 23 | The URL allowance replaces the visible address length. |
Release notes: https://example.com/releases 🚀 | 41 | 15 for the introduction, 23 for the link, a space and an emoji worth two. |
Café | 4 | The accented letter is normalized, including when pasted as e plus a combining accent. |
Why an X character counter differs from a regular counter
A generic counter may count stored characters without considering what they represent. For a standard X post, a long recognized URL can use less allowance than a short sentence, while decorative Unicode letters can use more than ordinary letters. This tool calculates that weighted total and keeps a separate word count for editing.
If a draft is too long, shorten the surrounding sentence before replacing an already recognized URL with another link. If you used the Twitter font generator, check the styled draft here: changing the appearance can also change the character weight.
This page focuses on checking a draft. For Premium limits, reply recipients and attachments, read the Twitter character-limit guide.
Twitter character counter questions
How do I check my Twitter character count?
Paste your draft into the editor above. The main number shows its weighted count against the standard 280-character allowance. Edit the draft to update the count and preview, then copy it into X for a final check.
Do spaces, hashtags and mentions count?
Yes. Ordinary spaces and single line breaks each use one character. Hashtags and manually typed @mentions use the allowance for their text, including the # or @. Reply recipients automatically added by X are different; this tool counts the text you actually enter.
Why does a link count as 23 characters?
X routes recognized web links through its t.co shortening service. The published standard-post rules reserve 23 characters for each recognized URL, even when the visible address is much shorter or longer. Expand See counted links to inspect what this parser recognized.
How many characters does an emoji use on Twitter?
A recognized emoji uses two, including supported skin-tone and family sequences. This tool uses the published twitter-text 3.1.0 parser. Its emoji and domain lists are older than some current additions, so the live X composer can give a different result for newer sequences or links.
Is this also a Twitter word counter?
Yes, it shows a secondary word count by splitting on whitespace. That is a rough writing aid, especially for languages that do not put spaces between words. X’s post allowance is based on weighted characters, not a number of words.
Does this check Premium posts, bios or direct messages?
No. This counter checks the published rules for standard 280-character posts. Premium longer posts, profile fields and direct messages have separate limits or validation. Use their own editors to check those formats.
Is the counter free, and is my draft saved?
Counting, previewing and copying are free without a Fireply account. The counter processes your draft in this browser tab and does not upload or save it. Refreshing or closing the page clears it. Copying places the original draft on your device’s clipboard.
